Poop Deck

By in Uncategorized

Growing up I watched my little brother get stuck picking up after our dogs. Every day he’d be out there with a bag and his poop glove, it was so gross. From then on I decided dogs, while I loved my childhood pups, were not my thing. So after moving out on my own I became a crazy cat lady. What I didn’t realize about cats was their waste is just as bad. Everyday I have to scoop up after them. Yeah, it’s in one spot and I don’t have to go trolling for poops in the yard like my brother, but it’s still gross and way more smelly.

What’s equally disgusting is the lack of totally awesome litterboxes. Most of them are giant rectangles and your lucky if they come with a lid.  None of them have any way to keep the litter in so it, inevitably, is splayed out all over the floor.  Years ago, I settled on the Booda dome litter box (which is an improvement stylewise) but just doesn’t work well in our long, thin bathroom. So when I stumbled upon ModKat, I was in love.

Matt W. Moore Calendar

During my habitual morning Google Reader cleaning I came across a stunning calendar, which I was disappointed to see was sold out. My disappointment was soon forgotten when I got a look at the work of the artist who was responsible for the calendar, Matt W. Moore.

Visions of New Glasses

By in Uncategorized

I’ve had rectangular black frame glasses since I was told by the optometrist that I shouldn’t have been allowed to drive with my sad, blurred vision. My latest (and priciest) incarnation of black frames are by Prada. They cost me a fair bit but I thought, “Hey they’ll last me for at least 5 years, probs more.” Yeah well…turns out, I’m kind of tired of them. I want something fun, something that says she’s nerdy and yet totes cool. (Even if only the former is true!)

2010 List of Lists

By in Websites

If you’re a list person, than the end of the year is a boon for finding “best of” lists, and boy were there plenty to be found. As much as I toyed with creating a list of my own, the holidays and the move into our new place just wouldn’t allow.

I love looking through them, if not for finding amazing bits of design I had overlooked but also for deriding the author for “obvious” omissions, respectfully of course.

Here are some of my favorite lists to end the year that will surely have you finding neat things you may have missed.

Feel free to post any others you think are worth a gander.

House Industries

By in Typography

If you’re a font nerd, than you’ve probably heard of House Industries, the brains behind Neutraface, one of my favorite fonts, among a few other really nice fonts. Even if you’re not a font nerd and you just love fancy things than you need to make a trip to their site and take a look around.

House Industries - Blocks

Beware though, between the killer Eames Blocks, the awesome prints and type-lovely towels it probably wouldn’t take long to rack up a huge tab. Eh, but it’s worth it, to make your other type-o-phile buddies and Papyrus users alike jealous.

A Typeface in print is worth two online

By in Typography, Web Design

We’ve come along way with what we can do with typefaces online. Services like Typekit offer us an extensive supply of fonts that can be used easily across browsers and operating systems and all of it with proper licensing. However, if you talk to a designer or a developer you can hear a story that will likely include a font looking great in Mac’s OS, and horrible in Windows, or it was perfect for the print material but failed utterly online.

Suffice to say we have a lot of progress we get to make on top of the success we’ve had with bringing the fonts to the web in the first place. Which brings me to this very important link which leads to a very well done and interesting blog, Typographica.org.

Click through for a short and well thought out discussion of where we stand with typefaces on the web, and where we need to go.

Edits by Edit

By in Graphic Design, Uncategorized

Edits by Edit is a super sweet collection of posters. Select designers were asked to design a poster for specific music genres using only one image and one typeface. This one by Hey Studio might just be my favorite… which one is yours?

Crumpled Up Lurve

Crumpled Map Packaging

This series of maps was created by Pizzolorusso, a Milan based Industrial Designer, for Palomar, an outstanding Italian design firm. Even though the idea may seem sort of gimmicky, it’s actually pretty ingenious, you’d think so too if you’ve ever tried to refold a large city map.
